Record number of HarbourCats drafted in 2016

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – June 11, 2016

VICTORIA, B.C.— The Victoria HarbourCats are very proud to announce that 2016 produced the largest class of HarbourCats selected in the Major League Baseball draft with a total of Eight current or former HarbourCats drafted. Headlining the list is 2013-15 HarbourCats infielder, Alex De Goti.

INF Alex De Goti: 15th round, 457th overall, Houston Astros.

De Goti, a Miami, Florida native recently completed his senior season at Barry University in Florida after playing his first three collegiate years at Long Beach State (NCAA Div. 1). He played each summer of his college career in Victoria and currently holds at least a share of 10 career statistical records for the HarbourCats including games (134), home runs (eight), RBIs (70) and stolen bases (33).

INF Tim Richards: 18th round, 543rd overall, Minnesota Twins

Richards hit .226 with a home run and nine RBIs in 38 games for the HarbourCats in 2013 before he reported for his freshman year at Cal State Fullerton (NCAA Div. 1) that fall. Richards became Fullerton’s starting shortstop as a sophomore, and in 2016 as a junior, hit .280 with a team-leading nine home runs and 31 RBIs. The Miami Marlins previously drafted Richards in the 40th round of the 2013 draft.

RHP Joe Navilhon: 21st round, 625th overall, Detroit Tigers

Navilhon pitched for the HarbourCats in 2013, appearing in 12 games, starting seven, posting a 3-6 record and 5.29 ERA in 51 innings pitched. A junior at the University of Southern California (NCAA Div. 1) this spring, Navilhon went 5-5 with a 3.38 ERA in 20 appearances, 11 starts with 71 strikeouts in 82 innings pitched.

INF Cameron Cannon: 21st round, 629th overall, Arizona Diamondbacks

Cannon is a member of the current 2016 HarbourCats. A native of Chandler, AZ, Cannon has a commitment to the University of Arizona (NCAA Div. 1) for this coming fall. As a senior at Mountain Ridge High School this spring, Cameron hit .353 with six home runs and 21 RBIs.

C Gunner Pollman: 26th round, 773rd overall, Miami Marlins

Pollman caught nine games for the HarbourCats in 2014 as a freshman out of Sacramento State University (NCAA Div. 1). He became the starting catcher at Sacramento State as a sophomore, and caught 103 games over the next two years, hitting .224.

RHP Dalton Erb: 30th round, 894th overall, San Diego Padres

Erb was the HarbourCats starting pitcher on Opening Night at Royal Athletic Park this past Tuesday, June 7 and was spectacular. The junior from Chico State University (NCAA Div. 2) carried a perfect game into the seventh against the Wenatchee AppleSox and maintained a no-hitter into the eighth inning. Erb went 6-3 with a 3.62 ERA in 15 starts this spring for Chico State, recording 70 strikeouts in 82 innings.

RHP Josh Burgmann: 30th round, 916th overall, St. Louis Cardinals

Burgmann is a native of Nanaimo, BC where he played in the BCPBL for the Nanaimo Pirates. He was also a member of Canada’s Junior National Team in 2015 and 2016, competing in the 2015 World Junior (U18) Baseball Championship in Osaka, Japan and pitching against major league teams in 2016 JNT extended spring training. Burgmann has a commitment to the University of Washington (NCAA Div. 1) for the fall of 2016.

OF John Schuknecht: 37th round, 1116th overall, LA Angels

Schuknecht came to the HarbourCats in 2013 as a freshman from Cal Poly (NCAA Div. 1) helping form a prosperous partnership between the school and the HarbourCats. John hit .248 in Victoria with six home runs and 18 RBIs in 36 games. He broke out as a senior at Cal Poly in 2016, batting .265 with six home runs and 49 RBIs.

The HarbourCats congratulate every one of these players on a momentous day in their careers. We are proud to have had you in Victoria, and look forward to following your careers.

This year’s selections raise the all-time total number of HarbourCats drafted by major league organizations to 32 players drafted by 23 different organizations.
