Red Deer Riggers Take Bronze at Men’s Nationals

The Red Deer Riggers JP Willner drew a bases loaded walk in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Riggers (Alberta 2) a walk-off 9-8 win over the Sherwood Park A’s (AB1) in the Bronze Medal game of the 2017 Baseball Canada Senior Men’s National Championships at Royal Athletic Park in Victoria Sunday evening.
The Riggers began the game by spotting the A’s a 4-0 first inning lead, before rebounding with six runs of their own in the bottom of the second and then adding runs in the third and the fourth to open an 8-4 lead.
The scrappy A’s battled back with one in the fifth and three in the sixth to tie, before the Riggers managed the walk-off dramatics in their final at bats.
For Red Deer, Kerry Boon led their 12-hit attack with three hits and a pair of runs, while Jason Louis added a double and three RBI. Shayne Court also had a pair of hits and pair of RBI in the win.
For the A’s, Cody Pendergast had three hits including a double, while Lance Romanchuk and Jeremy Harasymchuk had a pair of hits each in the losing effort.
Drew Boyer gets the win in relief of Steven Latos for the Riggers, while Adam Paulencu takes the loss in relief of Curtis Smith for the A’s.
