VICTORIA, B.C. — When people talk about businesses that are all about community, Peninsula Co-op often tops the list.

The Victoria HarbourCats and Peninsula Co-op are excited to be teaming together once again, bringing community to the ballpark and the return of the HarbourCats — and the return of the CEREMONIAL FIRST PITCH record attempt that was such a big hit in 2014.

So — let’s do that again!

On Saturday, June 11, starting at 9am, people can come to Wilson’s Group Stadium at RAP and throw a ceremonial first pitch — it’ll be happening all day long, leading up to the team’s first fireworks game that night since 2019.

On July 10, 2014, the team welcomed 5,253 people of all ages, sizes and abilities (photos below) to the park to throw the first pitch, sponsored by Peninsula Co-op.

“Doing it on a Saturday, and with so many people remembering that day, we expect to beat the record — that’s the goal,” said Assistant GM Christian Stewart, who nearly burned out his camera that day taking so many pictures of people of all sizes and ages getting up on the mound.

That’s not where Peninsula Co-op and “community” end with the HarbourCats. Peninsula Co-op will be sponsoring one other major events — a Special Olympics game to be played at RAP prior to the HarbourCats game vs. the Northwest Honkers on July 27th, always a fun time had by all, including HarbourCats players who get involved and match the grins of the Special Olympics stars.

“This game, on our field, with those athletes, just brings the fun back into focus,” said Curtis Pelletier, GM of the HarbourCats. “It really reminds us what it’s all about.”

Peninsula Co-op has been partnering with the HarbourCats since 2015, and could not be happier to see the team able to return after a two-year hiatus.

“The team at Peninsula Co-op is very excited to see the return of live baseball, and we’re happy to work with the HarbourCats to help bring a great experience for the community,” said Brandi Natarelli, Community Relations Coordinator for Peninsula Co-op. “We are looking forward to some fantastic evenings at the park and can’t wait to see the fans fill the stadium!”

The HarbourCats begin their 2022 West Coast League campaign with their home opener against the Port Angeles Lefties on Tuesday, May 31st at 6:35 pm. A full house is expected for that game, in what will be a celebratory return to baseball after a break of 1,017 days thanks to the cancellation of the past two seasons.  Tickets for that game and for all 2022 HarbourCats games can be purchased on-line through Select Your Tickets at harbourcats.com/tickets.

Tickets and HarbourCats merchandise are also available at the HarbourCats office at 101-1814 Vancouver Street just around the corner from the stadium.  Office hours are 9:30 am to 5:00 pm Monday through Friday. You can also call for tickets at 778-265-0327.
