Pitch-Perfect; Back-to-back shutout wins for HarbourCats

NEWS RELEASE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – June 28, 2017

CORVALLIS, WA—The Victoria HarbourCats (12-13) have been pitch-perfect the last two nights, shutting out the Corvallis Knights (14-10) in consecutive games after a 4-0 victory on Wednesday night.

It was left-hander Jack Owen’s (Auburn) turn to pace Victoria to victory at Goss Stadium in Corvallis.

The rising freshman southpaw was brilliant in his third start of the season for the HarbourCats. Owen pitched seven scoreless innings allowing just two hits and two walks while recording a season-high eight strikeouts.

Owen’s efforts were supported by just enough offense from the bats. A run in the top of the first proved to be all Victoria would need, and was supplement by single runs in the fifth, eighth and ninth innings.

The HarbourCats were led by a two-hit, two-RBI night for center fielder Andrew Shaps (Chico State) in his debut for Victoria. Third baseman Davis Wendzel was the other HarbourCat with two hits, and also scored a pair of runs.

Right-handers Noah Prewett (San Diego) and Indigo Diaz (Iowa Western CC) eached pitched a scoreless inning in relief for the HarbourCats.

The HarbourCats outhit Corvallis, 11-3 in the win.

Victoria’s 5-0 win on Tuesday, followed by Wednesday’s victory are the first two shutouts of the season for the team’s pitching staff.

Owen earned the win (2-0) for the HarbourCats, while left-hander Jordan Horak took the loss (3-1) for Corvallis, allowing two earned runs on six hits over five innings with two walks and four strikeouts.

Up next for the HarbourCats is the highly anticipated Canada Day homestand.

The Cowlitz Black Bears visit Victoria for a three-game series beginning on Thursday, June 29 at 6:35pm with BC Ferries Employee Night at the ballpark, and finishing with a 1:05pm start on Saturday, July 1.
