C/3B KEKAI RIOS, Junior, University of Hawaii – From Kahalu’u, HI, started 48 games as a freshman and is used as a C, 3B and DH to keep him fresh and his bat in the lineup. An exceptional defensive catcher who has been on the NCAA Johnny Bench Award list. Kekai is another returning HarbourCat, having played 13 games in 2017, before having to return to school for academic reasons. During that time, Rios hit .317 with 3 doubles and 6 RBI and established himself as a premier backstop and spending some time anchoring the first base position (photo below).

2017 (Sophomore): Appeared in 50 games, starting 44 at catcher and five as designated hitter…hit .282 with two home runs, 21 RBI and 10 doubles…finished tied for second on the team with 50 hits and second in on-base percentage at .388…worked 24 walks while scoring 29 runs to rank third on the team in both categories…hit safely in 11 straight games from March 11-30, going 18-for-38 (.474) with six doubles, eight RBI and 11 runs in that span…went 2-for-4 with a home run, two RBI and two runs scored in a win vs. Oral Roberts (March 5) at the Dairy Queen Classic…delivered a walk-off single in the ninth versus Indiana (March 18), capping off a 3-for-4 day, including a double and a run scored…finished 3-for-4 with a double, RBI and two runs scored in a win at Cal Poly (April 8)…turned in another three-hit contest against UC Davis on April 22, going 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI…led the way offensively in a win at CSUN on April 29, finishing 2-for-5 with three RBI…also went 2-for-4 with a home run, a double, two RBI and two runs scored at Long Beach State (May 20)…ranked fourth on the team with 14 multi-hit games, including five three-hit games…caught 14 runners stealing, ranking seventh in the Big West…member of the Johnny Bench Award watch list for the second consecutive year.

2016 (Freshman): A Big West honorable mention selection…started 48-of 49 games played in, mainly at catcher…finished second on the team and ninth in the Big West in batting average, hitting .331…caught 19 runners stealing, good for third most in the conference… was third on the team in hits with 52…finished fourth on the team in runs scored (23), RBI (18), on-base-percentage (.391), and doubles (8)…had the eighth highest conference batting average in the BWC, hitting .337…smacked his first career home run at CS Northridge (April 23), a game-winner in the 10th inning…picked up three hits in a game a team-leading six times…scored a career-high four runs in a game versus San Francisco (2/28)…went 3-for-4 with three runs scored in a game at #18 CS Fullerton (May 20)…one of just seven freshmen named to the Johnny Bench Award watch list.

Prep: A 2015 graduate of Kamehameha Schools-Kapalama…Lettered two years in baseball…Recorded three home runs in 62 at-bats and hit .355 for the 7-5 Warriors in his senior year…Helped the Warriors capture third place in the Division I Wally Yonamine Foundation Baseball State Championships presented by Hawaii High School Athletic Association (HHSAA) in 2015…Hit a .324 average with a .415 OBP as well as eight RBI, three doubles, and one home run his junior year…Named to the 2014-15 Interscholastic League of Hawaii (ILH) baseball all-stars first team… Received 2015 Perfect Game All-American West honorable mention as well as 2014 Underclass honorable mention.
