KAMLOOPS, B.C. — One swing by the ninth hitter in the Kamloops NorthPaws lineup proved to be the difference.
The Victoria HarbourCats opened the 2024 West Coast League campaign with a 2-1 loss in Kamloops, opening a three-game series as part of a six-game road trip to start things off. After games Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon in Kamloops, the HarbourCats will be off to Kelowna for matchups Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.
The ‘Cats have their much anticipated home opener Friday, June 7 against the Wenatchee AppleSox, with the buzz around the arrival of Manny and Lucas Ramirez, sons of MLB superstar Manny Ramirez. They will be in Victoria ahead of the home opener.
On Friday, the HarbourCats scored their lone run — lead off man and shortstop Ty Hall driven home by Jack Haggard — in the top of the third inning, but an error in the bottom half led to Manny Recchi’s two-run home run.
That was it for the scoring.
The HarbourCats had six hits, two by Haggard, and two by Garrett Teunissen, the latter with a double and a triple. The HarbourCats struck out 12 times.
Lefty starter Jake Finkelstein took the loss despite retiring the first seven batters. Four HarbourCats pitchers combined for just one walk.
