HarbourCats Announce First Signees for 2020 Season

HarbourCats start building 2020 roster with highly-touted 2019 WCL All-Star catcher Tyson Hays returning to Victoria

VICTORIA, B.C. — One of the top catchers in the West Coast League is returning to Victoria for a second season.

Tyson Hays of Illinois State, who hit .337 with five home runs and 25 RBIs in 26 games as a WCL rookie in 2019, and infielder Jake McCaw are the first players added to the 2020 roster. Hays, a 6-0/200 native of Denver, is entering his junior season and his strong work behind the plate and power bat will be a big part of the coming spring season at Illinois State.

Tyson Hays of Illinois State hit .337 with five home runs and 25 RBIs in 26 games as a WCL rookie with the HarbourCats in 2019. He was also selected to the 2019 North Division All-Star team and went 2 for 2 in the All-Star game in Bend.

Also heading to Victoria from Illinois State is junior infielder Jake McCaw, a lefty-hitting 6-3/192 product of Bloomington, Illinois, who is slated to be a middle-order bat for the Redbirds. McCaw had a decorated high school career, then an injury slowed his playing time — he’s healthy again and ready to contribute for Illinois State and the HarbourCats.

“These are two exciting signings for us — Tyson was an outstanding player and citizen with our program last year, in our eyes the best catcher in the WCL last season,” said Jim Swanson, Managing Partner/GM of the HarbourCats. “Tyson and Jake are close friends, and Tyson really wanted a second summer in this league, and in Victoria. We expect these two to be leaders and major contributors as we look to get back to the playoffs and win a championship for Victoria.

“Further work is being done to complete commitments to our team for 2020, our eighth season of HarbourCats baseball. We have some exciting names to announce as paperwork is completed over the coming weeks and months.”
