FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – October 12, 2016
VICTORIA, B.C. – The Victoria HarbourCats have signed outfielder Zach Diewert, a sophomore at Polk State College and product of Chemainus, B.C. for the 2017 West Coast League season. The club has also signed infielder Nick Moroney and right-handed pitchers Radd Thomas and Liam Steigerwald from UC Santa Barbara (NCAA Div. 1; Big West).
OF ZACH DIEWERT, Polk State College, (Sophomore), Chemainus, B.C., 5-11/235
INF NICK MORONEY, UC Santa Barbara, (Freshman), Danville, CA, 6/180
RHP RADD THOMAS, UC Santa Barbara, (Freshman), Newcastle, CA, 6-2/185
RHP LIAM STEIGERWALD, UC Santa Barbara, (Freshman), San Ramon, CA, 6-4/195
Zach Diewert is a sophomore at Polk State College in Florida and possesses a dangerous combination of power and speed. The Nanaimo Pirates (B.C. Premier League) alum hit .338 with seven home runs and 37 RBIs as a freshman for Polk State in 2016 and stole 26 bases without being caught stealing.
Diewert played in the Florida Collegiate Summer League in 2016 where he hit .284 with six doubles, a homerun and 14 RBIs as well as 16 stolen bases. He is drawing interest as a top recruit from multiple NCAA Division 1 programs.
Nick Moroney is a talented infielder in his freshman year at UCSB with exciting capability on both sides of the ball. Maroney hit .311 with 20 RBIs over the course of his high school career at San Ramon Valley High School, at hit over .340 in his junior and senior years. He also possesses versatility defensively with the ability to play multiple positions on the infield.
Radd Thomas is a strong right-hander who will have an opportunity to pitch meaningful innings for UCSB as a freshman in 2017. With fastball velocity that has touched 90 mph, Thomas pitched a no-hitter with 15 strikeouts during his senior season at Placer High School en route to being named a 2016 Perfect Game Honourable Mention All-American.
Liam Steigerwald is a tall freshman right-hander who was a two-sport star in baseball and basketball at California High School. Steigerwald pitched to a 2.30 ERA and ten wins during his high school career. He also pitched on the Mariners scout team in 2015.
The three new signees from UC Santa Barbara give the HarbourCats a full compliment of four Gauchos on the 2017 roster including recently re-signed outfielder Matt Lautz.
UCSB has a longstanding relationship with the HarbourCats, sending impact players to Victoria each year. 2015 fourth-overall MLB draft pick right-handed pitcher Dillon Tate signed with the HarbourCats for the 2013 season before electing to rest for the summer shortly before the WCL season.
