VICTORIA, B.C. — It’s a very large step from high school baseball to the college ranks. It’s an even bigger one to collegiate summer leagues, where the best of the best earn prestigious placements.

It’s even more so for local players to face the spotlight of playing in their hometown, and three young men are in line for the responsibility that comes with that opportunity with the Victoria HarbourCats in 2021 — in a league that features many of the top NCAA Division1 talents.

The HarbourCats are pleased to have a start for their pitching staff and some depth on offense with the signings of three Victoria players:

  • Noah Takacs, RHP, Sacramento State
  • Josh Walker, OF, Sacramento State
  • Eric Luchies, LHP/1B, Lower Columbia College

Takacs, a freshman at 6-3/200, has been part of the junior national team program, and was a blue-chip recruit. He is a product of the Victoria Eagles and PISE baseball programs, graduating from Oak Bay. A power right-hander with pro potential.

Luchies, a freshman at 6-2/205, went to St. Andrews and played for the Victoria Eagles program. A raw lefty with power as a pitcher, and from the left side of the plate.

Walker, a utility player at 6-0/165, is a product of Lambrick Park and the Mariners, and was on the roster of the junior national team. Was with Sacramento State for the 2020 spring season, playing in six games before the pandemic cut things short, batting .118 with a double and an RBI.

“These are quality local players who will be pushed harder than ever before when they join our program next summer,” said Curtis Pelletier, assistant coach and recruiting coordinator. “We are seeing great talent coming out of the Mariners and Eagles programs and are excited for the future of baseball in Victoria”
