FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – April 18, 2017
VICTORIA, B.C. – It’s an event like no one in Victoria has seen before — home runs, being hit into the ocean. Splash hits that will mark the opening of the Baseball Canada Men’s Championship presented by Yates Street Taphouse in the B.C. capital.
On the evening of Wednesday, August 23, some of the best power hitters from across Canada will be representing their provinces, hitting batting practice pitches for home runs into the water between the cruise ship piers. The event is sponsored by Victoria Mobile Radio, in partnership with the Greater Victoria Harbour Authority, and with charitable proceeds going to the B.C. Children’s Hospital Foundation.

“This is something that has been done in a few places before, but never in Canada that we’re aware of, and we’re excited for how this will really help us make a big splash, pardon the pun, for the start of the men’s national tournament,” said chair Gary Beyer.
“Ten home run hitters, hitting towering blasts over the home run line, to be declared the best home run hitter in Canada — it will be a lot of fun and it will be a unique event that Victoria can really get excited about.”
The “Harbour Derby with Victoria Mobile Radio” will be free to the public, with White Spot supplying food options. Kayakers will be in the water retrieving all the baseballs.
The event will be streamed live for free on Facebook Live thanks to Victoria Buzz.
The schedule is now set for the tournament as well — the path to one of 10 teams winning the gold medal at the Baseball Canada Men’s Championship presented by Yates Street Taphouse, featuring provincial champions from across the country. The host team is the Victoria Mavericks, comprised of local players with top pick-ups from Vancouver Island and B.C., while the 2016 provincial-champion Burnaby Bulldogs will represent B.C.
Details on remaining teams will be announced soon, so fans can be familiar with the competition for this event.
The 26-game tournament, being coordinated by a host committee and supported by the HarbourCats, will take place in Victoria on August 24-27. Royal Athletic Park, home of the Victoria HarbourCats, will serve as the primary field hosting 18 games including the entire playoff Sunday. The remaining games will be played at Lambrick Park, and all games there are free admission.
The schedule will see seven games played each of the first two days, August 24-25, with a total of nine of those games played at Royal Athletic Park. Eight games will be played on Saturday, August 26, five at Royal Athletic Park.
