Big inning haunts HarbourCats in first loss of 2017

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – June 3, 2017

YAKIMA, WA—For the third straight game, the Victoria HarbourCats started strong, but they were unable to sustain it on Saturday, being done in by a seven-run sixth inning in an 11-4 loss to the Yakima Valley Pippins.

The HarbourCats opened the scoring on a triple by Noah Prewett (San Diego) that scored left-fielder Kevin Collard (San Diego).  First baseman Kekai Rios (Hawaii) and centerfielder Ethan Lopez (Hawaii) led off the fourth inning with consecutive singles and each came around to score to put Victoria ahead by a score of 3-0.

Starting left-hander Isaac Mullins (Washington State) was strong for Victoria, allowing two runs, one earned, on four hits and a walk with three strikeouts over five innings.  Both runs came on a fourth inning home run off the bat of left-fielder Michael Russo (CSU Northridge).

It all unraveled in the sixth inning for the HarbourCats when Yakima plated seven runs on six hits off of right-handed relievers Connor Whitney (Park Univ.) and Indigo Diaz (Iowa Western CC) to surge ahead, 9-4.

The Pippins added two more runs in the eighth inning to arrive at the 11-4 final score.

Yakima Valley right-handed starting pitcher Kade Woods (Spokane Falls CC) earned the win (1-0) going eight innings, allowing four runs, three earned, on eight hits with four strikeouts.

Connor Whitney (0-1) takes the loss for the HarbourCats, allowing three runs on one hit and two walks without retiring a batter in relief.

Rios and shortstop Harry Shipley (Purdue) each finished 2 for 4 with a run scored for the HarbourCats who finished with eight hits.

Victoria pitching surrendered nine runs, seven earned, on 12 hits.

Russo was one of three Pippins to collect two RBIs while Nick Plaia (Cal Baptist) led all players with three hits.

The HarbourCats fall to 2-1 on the season while Yakima Valley improves to 1-1. The two teams play the final game of their weekend series on Sunday at 5:05pm.

The HarbourCats begin a three-game home-opening series against the Wenatchee AppleSox on Monday, June 5.  Gates open at 5:00pm in advance of the 6:35pm first pitch to allow fans extra time to find their seats and soak in the atmosphere of Opening Night which will be full of pageantry and excitement on and off the field.
