A special game, with Special athletes, to start a special season

March 6, 2019, Victoria, BC – The Victoria HarbourCats will have their work cut out for them before the season even starts — facing a team that finished second in Canada last season.

Prior to the first-ever Alumni Classic on Saturday, June 1, at Wilson’s Group Stadium at Royal Athletic Park, the HarbourCats will face off against the Victoria Special Olympics team which claimed the silver medal at last year’s nationals in Antigonish, NS.

The game is sponsored by Peninsula Co-op, a great Island partner of the HarbourCats. Gates will open at 5:30pm, which is when the Special Olympics/HarbourCats game will start.

This will be the second time in as many years that the HarbourCats will play a game on their home field against Victoria’s best Special Olympics players — and the new crew of HarbourCats should be warned: Last year, the Special Olympians beat the HarbourCats, and good!

Today’s announcement coincides with the “Spread the Word to End the R-Word” campaign, which will be prevalent in Canada today.

“This is a special event, for our team, but certainly for the Special Olympics athletes who have represented this area and their families with such skill and pride,” said Jim Swanson, General Manager and Managing Partner of the HarbourCats. “Our players love this game, it really brings back the true joy of sports. We urge people to come and see this amazing way we’ll start our seventh season in Victoria, we promise you will be moved by watching this game.

Our off-season office hours at 1814 Vancouver Street are now 10:00 am to 5:00 pm Tuesday through Friday. We are closed (or by appointment only) on Monday, Saturday and Sunday.
