HarbourCats rebound with shutout win

NEWS RELEASE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – June 27, 2017

VICTORIA, B.C. – The Victoria HarbourCats (11-13) rebounded from Monday’s defeat by recording their first shutout victory of 2017 on Tuesday night, 5-0 over the Corvallis Knights.

The HarbourCats tied the three-game series at a game a piece with Corvallis (14-9) and in the process, end a three-game losing streak in the season series with the Knights.

Victoria was led by right-hander Luke Boyd (Baylor), who was tremendous from the first pitch of his third start of the season. The rising sophomore pitched seven efficient, scoreless innings, allowing just three hits and two walks with four strikeouts.

The bulk of the offence came early, beginning with two runs in the top of the first on the strength of an RBI double by centerfielder Hunter Vansau (Mississippi State) and a sac fly RBI from Kevin Collard (San Diego).

The HarbourCats added runs in the second and third to build a 4-0 lead. Right-hander Louis Crow (San Diego) could only go two innings for Corvallis, allowing three runs on three hits and three walks with three strikeouts.

Second baseman Nick Moroney (UC Santa Barbara) drove in Jake Garella on a single for the final HarbourCats run of the night in the top of the eighth inning.

Victoria catcher Tanner Rempel (Colorado Mesa) led all players with three hits. Shortstop Harry Shipley was the other player to record multiple hits for the HarbourCats who finished with 11 as a team.

Boyd (2-2) earned the win for the HarbourCats while Crow (0-1) took the loss for Corvallis.

Travis Kuhn (San Diego) pitched the final two innings scoreless for the HarbourCats, allowing one hit with five strikeouts.

The rubber match of the series is set for 6:40pm on Wednesday at Goss Stadium in Corvallis.

Up next for the HarbourCats is the highly anticipated Canada Day homestand.

The Cowlitz Black Bears visit Victoria for a three-game series beginning on Thursday, June 29 at 6:35pm with BC Ferries Employee Night at the ballpark, and finishing with a 1:05pm start on Saturday, July 1.

Friday, June 30 is one of the highlights of the regular season at RAP with Friday Night Fireworks presented by Wilson’s Transportation.  The spectacular 18-minute fireworks display, which is set up on the field, will follow shortly after the final out of the HarbourCats and Black Bears game, which begins at 6:35pm.

Fireworks games are always a hot ticket and fans are encouraged to secure their seats in advance by visiting the HarbourCats office or ordering tickets online: https://t.co/8fTF63alFb
