HarbourCats to host Mavericks in non-league action

PRESS RELEASE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – June 27, 2017

VICTORIA, B.C. – The Victoria HarbourCats are pleased to announce the scheduling of an additional non-league game at Royal Athletic Park on Monday, July 3.

The HarbourCats will play the Victoria Mavericks at 5:00pm, a great way for people to relax at the end of the July Long Weekend. It will be the second time the HarbourCats and Mavericks have played at RAP this season. The Mavericks roster is comprised of the best former collegiate and professional players in the Victoria area, including a number of former HarbourCats.

Regular admission prices are in effect for the game, and all season ticket holders will have their seats held as a bonus for them and a thank-you for their on-going support. Flex pack tickets can be redeemed for the game.

The game was originally to have been played in Nanaimo, but factors led to the game being returned to RAP.

LHP Claire Eccles will get the start on the mound, and former HarbourCats star Griffin Andreychuk is hopeful to come in from Nanaimo to be in the lineup for the Mavericks. Eccles, used primarily as a left-handed reliever out of the bullpen this season, meaning she is “hot” for any game the HarbourCats play, will be making her second spot start of her HarbourCats career. Head coach Brian McRae is expected to use a “by committee” pitching approach in this game as the HarbourCats heat up for the WCL second half, with Eccles getting the opening few innings.

Andreychuk, a star at Seattle U, was a fan favourite player for the HarbourCats for three seasons, and was added to the team’s Ring of Honour last summer.

The game will function for Mavericks players, as preparation and identification for August’s Baseball Canada Men’s Nationals presented by Yates Street Taphouse. Members of the Mavericks will suit up for Victoria’s host team in the tournament.  One of the notable players in the game will be Kyle Orr, who was a high draft pick of the Los Angeles Dodgers, and has been taking BP and working on his defense with the HarbourCats to prepare himself for later in the summer.

Victoria will host the best amateur men’s players in Canada in the national championship from August 24-27. Royal Athletic Park will serve as the primary host site with additional games being held at Lambrick Park.

On July 15-16, the HarbourCats will host a pair of non-league games at RAP against the Burnaby Bulldogs, who are the B.C. representative in Men’s Nationals.  July 15 is also Saturday Night Fireworks presented by Wallace Driving School.

Up next for the HarbourCats is the highly anticipated Canada Day homestand.

The Cowlitz Black Bears visit Victoria for a three-game series beginning on Thursday, June 29 at 6:35pm with BC Ferries Employee Night at the ballpark, and finishing with a 1:05pm start on Saturday, July 1.

Friday, June 30 is one of the highlights of the regular season at RAP with Friday Night Fireworks presented by Wilson’s Transportation.  The spectacular 18-minute fireworks display, which is set up on the field, will follow shortly after the final out of the HarbourCats and Black Bears game, which begins at 6:35pm.

Fireworks games are always a hot ticket and fans are encouraged to secure their seats in advance by visiting the HarbourCats office or ordering tickets online: https://t.co/8fTF63alFb

The series finale against Cowlitz takes place at 1:05pm on Canada Day, Saturday, July 1. Skydivers will drop in to signal the first pitch, and ‘Zamboni Man’ Marko Kardum will return to RAP to help celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday.

Following the game, fans (18 and above) are invited to attend a postgame function hosted by Yates Street Taphouse.

Summer is already in full swing in the Capital City, and the Harbour City, and so too is baseball season!
