Eagles-Mariners, Thursday at RAP; Girls skills camp Saturday

NEWS RELEASE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – June 13, 2017

VICTORIA, B.C. – Royal Athletic Park is about to become a haven for youth-level baseball, with exciting events over the next few days.

On Thursday, June 15, the Victoria HarbourCats are hosting the annual “Zack Downey Memorial” baseball game, featuring the city’s two high-school-level baseball teams, the Victoria Eagles, coached by former HarbourCats coach Charlie Strandlund, and the Victoria Mariners. Game time for the Premier Baseball League regular season game is 6:00pm, and admission is $5 rush seating.

On Saturday, June 17, national women’s team players Claire Eccles, who pitches for the HarbourCats, and catcher Jennifer Gilroy will headline a Baseball BC girls grassroots camp focusing on fun and development, which will also serve as an identification opportunity for the Baseball Canada program. That session will take place from 2:00pm-4:00pm, following check-in at Royal Athletic Park.

A boys/girls camp will take place on Saturday, June 17 as well, from noon until 2:00pm.

Cost to enter each camp is $20, through Baseball BC.

“We are proud to work with Baseball BC on these camps, and to help develop the future baseball players of this area,” said Jim Swanson, managing partner of the HarbourCats.

“As an organization, we are dedicated to helping local groups build the game, through fund-raising opportunities and partnerships. We support many local groups in many ways. To be able to hold the PBL game at our park hopefully also shows that we can all work together to build this great game, and it’s indeed an honor to be able to remember Zack Downey in a way he and his family will treasure. Such great people, who simply love the game – the game meant so much to Zack.”

The HarbourCats host the Port Angeles Lefties on Tuesday, June 13 at 6:35pm at Royal Athletic Park. Long-time Victoria umpire Doug Hudlin will be honored in a pregame ceremony. Hudlin will be inducted posthumously into the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame later this month.
